About this accreditation

This accreditation means a product can be broken down through industrial processes. That means you can place it in your kerbside compost bin ready for collection by your local council.

Something which is industrially compostable needs a bit of help breaking down, so you cannot necessarily place it in your garden compost bin. The conditions in garden compost or landfill aren’t strong enough (especially the temperature) so it wouldn’t break down and it may stick around for years, potentially releasing gases like methane in the process.

To have this accreditation we require products to meet compostability standard EN 13432, a harmonised European standard linked to the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste. Some brands may also have certain certifications including TUV OK Compost or TUV Seedling.
