Reusable Water Bottles
Stay hydrated with style and reduce the plastic in your bag while you're at it
View all productsWhy Swap
- A staggering one million plastic bottles are used every single minute. Half of these are used just once before being disposed of
- The carbon footprint of bottled water is 300 times that of tap water (and much more expensive, to boot)
- It's estimated that out of all the plastic waste ever generated, just 9% has been recycled. Most plastic ends up in landfill or is incinerated, creating more CO2, dangerous chemicals and microplastics
The Alternatives
Ditching single-use plastic water bottles is a vital step in reducing plastic pollution globally. It's also a lot cheaper to refill from the tap or from refill points, cafes and restaurants while on the go – you can even download the Refill app to locate your nearest point. There are loads of options for reusable water bottles now, and they come in all shapes and sizes. They've naturally become somewhat of a style accessory, appearing as major props in TV shows like Love Island. Popular options include aluminium and plastic. As with any reusable item used for food or drink, the key is not just to consider the material it's made from, but how many times you reuse it and how you wash it each time.
Metal Water Bottles
Aluminium and stainless steel water bottles can be nice and light in weight while also being very durable and long-lasting. They're great at keeping water cool on a sunny day and can even do a good job of keeping hot liquids warm in colder weather. At the end of their life, they can be recycled but just make sure any other types of material, for instance any seal in the cap, are removed.

Reusable Plastic Water Bottles
The bottles most water bottles are sold in isn't suitable for extended reuse, breaking down and leaking chemical and microplastics as soon as there's any signs of wear and tear. While we'd encourage a total move away from plastic wherever possible, if you still want to use a plastic bottle make sure you opt for a reusable option which will be much better suited for refilling.
